The town park
would serve all residents
Once again, discussions about building the Bedford Town Common have divided the town. The project is geared to bringing the community together in a town center for ice skating, walking along its paths and spending time reflecting at its war memorial, and it’s a plan whose time has come. Money has already been spent on permits and engineering, and all that will be wasted if the town does not move forward. In addition, as time goes on, the project becomes more expensive. Many town park committee members and businesses have spent in-kind hours trying to beautify an area in town for passive recreation. It’s a shame the town seems to find money to renovate a meeting room and buy new laptops; the school district spends money building bleachers and paying too much money for land. Money also goes to building sports fields, but when it comes to developing a drab open area in town center for all residents, the controversy drags on. At a recent Town Council meeting, Jayne Spaulding suggested money from the Parks and Recreation Commission could be used to help build the park. Parks and Recreation Chairman Bill Foote said about $100,000 may be available. We don’t have to make the park 100 percent perfect from the start. Let’s prioritize the basics and build from there. - Editorials published by Neighborhood News Inc. are written by an editorial board.
